The medium grade fibre is used in the cordage industry for making: ropes, baler and binders twine. The lower grade fibre is processed by the paper industry because of its high content of cellulose and hemicelluloses.
Sisal is used by industry in three grades: It is valued for cordage use because of its strength, durability, ability to stretch, affinity for certain dyestuffs, and resistance to deterioration in saltwater. Sisal fibre is fairly coarse and inflexible. The lustrous strands, usually creamy white, average from 80 to 120 cm in length and 0.2 to 0.4 mm in diameter. Once it is dried the fibre is mechanically double brushed. The dried fibre represents only 4% of the total weight of the leaf. The fibre is then washed and dried by mechanical or natural means. It is usually obtained by machine decortications in which the leaf is crushed between rollers and then mechanically scraped. It wasn't overly busy, but the grounds were very nice, the equipment new and well maintained, and all of it was very economical. The ladies had a similar experience on horseback, though different trails. Senor Marin was our guide and took us on about a 45 min ride back on some nice but tame trails, showed us some various protected mayan ruins (this backs up to Chichen Itza) and told us some great stories about the area. My 17 year old son and I chose the ATV's, while my wife and 15 year old daughter wanted to do the horse ride. Its co-located with the Hotel Okaan property, which we wish we'd found instead of the place we stayed! We were greeted at the gate by a nice gentleman who explained the various adventure opportunities, which included horse back riding, ATV trails, along with a couple of other things.
It was a bit back in the woods, but once you got to the site it was very impressive. While driving to Merida, we saw the sign and pulled in on a whim. We had looked at Chichen Park online, but there was scant information so didn't pre-book anything.
